What Happened to Kerouac?

Portrait de l’écrivain et poète Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), auteur de Sur la route (1957), Les Clochards célestes (1958), Mexico City Blues (1959) ou Big Sur (1962), à partir d’archives (dont un entretien et une lecture diffusées à la télévision en 1968, un an avant sa mort) et d’entretiens contemporains avec ses proches. Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder et d’autres discutent de la place de Kerouac dans la littérature américaine et le XXe siècle – entre le narratif et la poésie, portant haut sa technique d’écriture spontanée, dans une perspective de célébration du monde et de l’amour presque pré-moderne et anti-politique. Le film est réalisé par le documentariste Richard Lerner, le poète et journaliste Lewis MacAdams (qui a ensuite collaboré avec John Dorr sur plusieurs films-entretiens autour de la poésie à la fin des années 1980) et contient des séquences du cinéaste expérimental Nathaniel Dorsky.
Produit en dehors de EZTV, What Happened to Kerouac? y est montré début 1985. C’est un succès majeur de la scène vidéo, restant à l’affiche plusieurs mois, et simultanément dans d’autres lieux vidéos de Los Angeles. Le film représente la possibilité d’un essor vidéo dans les années 1980, et le goût certain pour la littérature et la poésie américaine au sein d’EZTV.

Burroughs, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder and others discuss Kerouac’s place in American literature and poetry and the XXth century – between narrative and poetry, showcasing his spontaneous writing technique, in a perspective of celebration of the world and love almost pre-modern and anti-political. The film is directed by documentarist Richard Lerner, poet and journalist Lewis MacAdams (who went on to collaborate with John Dorr on several filmed interviews about poetry in the late 1980s) and contains sequences by experimental filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsey.
Produced outside of EZTV, What Happened to Kerouac? was shown there in early 1985. It became a major success within the video scene, playing for several months and simultaneously in other video theaters in Los Angeles. The film represents the possibility of video success in the 1980s, and a certain taste for American literature and poetry within EZTV.
